IUCN status: least concern. From Land’s End in England’s far south to the Orkneys off the coast of northern Scotland, here are seven go-to destinations renowned for both on and off-land whale, dolphin and porpoise sightings.

Although strandings were recorded in every month of the year, highest numbers were found in January–March and August. Globally, striped dolphins are considered common within their range but they are rarely seen in UK waters. The most notable threats to striped dolphins include entanglement in fishing nets, reduction in prey availability due to overfishing and contamination from pollutants. During 1992–2003, 52 striped dolphin strandings were recorded in Scotland (UK). Striped dolphins were stranded all around the Scottish coast, but the majority were recovered from the west coast.

The striped dolphin is subject to similar threats to the common dolphin, including entanglement in fishing gear, pollution, collisions with vessels, decrease in available prey and habitat degradation.
Abundance is patchy, however, and there is at least some migration, moving to warmer waters in winter.

In some areas, particularly in Japan, the striped dolphin is subject to hunting. Striped dolphins are a species which prefers to live in the open ocean. Around the UK they are mostly found around the south-west coast of England, and appear to be increasing their distribution around Britain, possibly as a result of warming sea temperatures.
