A good song can have silly lyrics but if the music is bad it’s a bad song. The first thing you need is the beat and the rhythm. When I started to do original songs with my band (one year ago circa) I prepare “at home” much of the song structure, but with the time when in my band we develop more musical affinity together, I start to write lyrics and prepare only few riff or chord progression, and I develop the song with my band.
