As a defense to his second charge of corrupting the youth of the city “that man Socrates is a pestilential fellow who corrupts the youth.” Socrates also questions Meletus to embarrass him not in order to prove his point. Socrates uses a fair bit of bullying and baiting and suggests Meletus is confused about the teaching of virtue and that he contradicts himself in accusing Socrates both of atheism and of inventing new gods.

Then every Athenian improves and elevates them; all with the exception of myself; and I alone am their corrupter?

He asks why anyone would want to harm others, since this would result in one's own harm too; yet Meletus contends that Socrates did this intentionally. He asks Meletus who helps the youth, and he replies all the other citizens of Athens. SOCRATES: Why, Meletus, are you at your age so much wiser than I at mine, as to have realise, that evil men always do evil to those who are closest to them, and the good some good, whereas I am sunk in such a depth of ignorance as to be unaware that, if I make any of my associates a knave, I am likely to suffer some harm from him, and yet, according to you, I commit this evil intentionally?

Socrates exposes that horse-trainers must have many years of experience to positively influence a horse; he is suggesting that if it takes such specialty to improve a horse it would be foolish to think everyone in Athens except Socrates has a positive influence on the youth.

Why, indeed, except for the sake of truth and justice, and because they know that I am speaking the truth, and that Meletus is a liar.

Does one man do them harm and all the world good? Yet Socrates shows how horses are benefited by the few trained to do so, not the many. His argument, in a sarcastic way, was that it was impossible for everyone in Athens to be improving the youth except for him. Socrates calls forth Meletus, his chief accuser, and questions him about the charges he has laid. Is that what you affirm? In this paper, I will argue that Socrates is not guilty of corrupting the youth with the idea of not believing in the Gods but of teaching the youth to think for themselves by looking to new divinities.

But suppose I ask you a question: Would you say that this also holds true in the case of horses?

Socrates creates an analogy and compares Meletus statement to horses and horse-trainers. Socrates gets Meletus to admit that he makes the ludicrous claim that "the whole population of Athens has a refining effect upon the young, except [Socrates]; and [Socrates] alone corrupt[s] them."
Socrates contribution to Athens is reminding the people "that God only is wise".
