Unlike most other hornbills, Oriental pied-hornbills can be found outside primary rainforests and may visit inhabited areas to feed on fruit. They are the only truly wild hornbills found on Singapore. They are very noisy and often call with squeals and chuckles; mostly their call is a cackling kek-kek-kek-kek. They had been in decline in Singapore and until a few years ago there had been artificial nest boxes installed at various locations. The exact pattern of sightings is poorly documented, but individual birds must have been coming and going, from time to time right up to the 1960s. The Oriental Pied Hornbill is a species native to Singapore, that bred here during the 19th century, and that declined to the point of local extinction. But they still depend on large living trees for nesting sites. Oriental pied-hornbills are commonly seen on Pulau Ubin and sometimes also at Changi. Male has creamy bill with large black base on mandible, large casque is cylindrical with black projecting front part, female bill and casque smaller, marked with black, lower mandible has dark red spot. Extinct in Singapore by 1855, the species made a surprising comeback in 1994, first on Pulau Ubin and then on mainland Singapore. Oriental Pied Hornbills eat mostly fruit and we often observed them in trees feeding or flying clumsily across the sky.
