Show less Mistle thrushes are early singers and you'll often hear one singing from the top of a tall tree in windy winter weather. The mistle thrush is a large songbird, commonly found in parks, gardens, woodland and scrub. Their ‘fluting’ phrase is one of the earliest signs of spring, and they usually start singing by late January. A colloquial name for mistle thrush is ‘stormcock’. It is larger and paler than the similar song thrush, standing upright and bold. In flight, it has long wings and its tail has whitish edges. The mistle thrush is is a pale, black-spotted thrush - large, aggressive and powerful. It is most likely to be noticed perched high at the top of a tree, singing its fluty song or giving its rattling call in flight.

This comes from their tendency to defend territories from the top of the tallest tree, even if it is windy and raining. The mistle thrush likely got its name from its love of Mistletoe - it will defend a berry-laden tree with extreme ferocity!
Because of this habit, an old name for the thrush is 'storm cock'. It stands boldly upright and bounds across the ground.
